Do you ever hear a quote that stops you dead in your tracks? The kind that makes you take pause and just stays with you? One that you will forever repeat and think about…
I heard one today and felt the urge to share it. I was listening to my favorite podcaster Angelo Coppola from Latest In Paleo and although there is much on his shows that sticks with me, this particular quote stopped me in place. It may not do the same for you and that’s ok. But I have to share it and what it means to me. Because for me, it is more than just some words someone said…
Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
This was said by influential leader Howard Thurman, in an interview with author Gil Bailie when being interviewed for his book Violence Unveiled.
We all (or at least most people) spend so much time trying to find our purpose or what we can do to make the world around us a better place. We want to leave our mark, make a difference, be the change we want to see and so on. But we find ourselves spending more time searching than actually doing. So many people spend their entire lives searching for their purpose only to end up on their deathbed regretting all the things they didn’t do because they spent to much time looking.
It’s so simple though. What the world really needs is for us to be alive and happy. Just being.
Think about those things you do that give you a buzz… A natural buzz (I know what you’re thinking). But seriously. Have you ever been so involved in an activity that you completely lose track of time? That all the worries and fears just seem to disappear, at least for that time being? Those moments when you feel you are functioning on a whole other level? Those activities that make us feel alive. Those are the activities that give us purpose.
When we feel alive we lose ourselves and find ourselves all at the same time. Ego goes away and our authentic self steps in. When we are functioning on that level, we are bringing the energy up in us and around us. We are then living our purpose because we feel right and the Universe begins conspiring with us. And when we choose this path in our life, all of our intentions align and we become unstoppable.
The world needs us to be alive. Because when we are alive we bring life, energy, awareness, and purpose to what is around us. We heal. We energize. We bring balance. And the more people who are alive, doing the things that feel right, (and truly right, not something that simply feels good in that moment) the more we raise the energy of the world we live in. The easier it will become to heal the world and each other. When we live with purpose, doing the things that make us come alive, we become happy, the ego has no room to live, and war becomes unnecessary and repulsive to everyone. We will stop destroying our planet and each other. We will learn to connect and love. And most importantly, we will learn how to just be.
So again… Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
Take some time and think about those moments in your life. What were you doing? How did you get there? How do you get there again? Tune in to yourself. Wake up and pay attention. Do things that heighten your life and sense of being. And keep doing them.
And most importantly, don’t make excuses. That’s just fear and ego rearing its ugly head. When you align yourself with your purpose… and you inherently know what that is if you just take the time to listen to yourself, then you will find ways to become more successful than you could have ever imagined.
