Tipsy Tuesday – Nami Star

I really enjoy creating Kapow‘s specialty cocktails every week. Some are great and some are ok. It takes a while before you really have a handle on what your audience likes. I’m trying to introduce new flavors and not make them overly sweet (which Florida cocktails are known for). I get that we are a beach state, but not everyone wants to go into a sugar coma after one cocktail. And forget about the hangover the next morning… So, although I’m noticing that people like to stay on the sweeter side of things, I do believe that there are some taste buds out there that just need to be opened up to different options. This cocktail is extremely interesting and easily one of my new favorites. I’m excited to hear how it went over at Kapow cause it is definitely not something you would expect. To me, it literally tastes like Asian food in a glass. With the sesame oil rim and flavor of light licorice from the anise powder, added to a citrus almond, ginger base… well, you can’t go wrong.

The Good Stuff:

  • Sesame Oil
  • 1 1/2 oz orange infused Tito’s Vodka
  • 1/2 oz Amaretto Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • 3/4 oz Lime Juice
  • Ground Ginger
  • Grated Star Anise Powder (you can make yourself by grinding anise powder in a coffee grinder)
  • 1 Star Anise pod
  • Martini Glass

 The How To:

  1. Rim a martini glass with sesame oil.
  2. In a shaker glass combine Titos, Amaretto, Simple Syrup, Lime Juice, and a shake of Ginger. Shake vigorously!
  3. Pour into martini glass.
  4. Add a couple pinches of Star Anise Powder.
  5. Add a couple drops of sesame oil and a Star Anise Pod and serve.

The Naming Of The Cocktail:

NaMi in Korean means Too Beautiful. It is also the the name of a women of a Korean Folk Tale who fled Korea during the Korean war in 1950.

The brief story is that North Koreans had captured NaMi after she had given birth to two twin girls, Mi Song (which means beautiful star), and Un Ha (which means galaxy). There was much gender discrimination among females and she knew she had to escape.

With her two girls she escaped and fled during Christmas Eve. She ran through the night and encountered many troubles. In the morning she came upon two nurses, Australian and American, at a M.A.S.H. unit. They gave her all they had to feed her and her two babies. With their help, and help of others of different nationalities she was able to make it to safety although her husband fought and died during the war.

The Folk Tale is a story of courage, ghosts, and soldiers. It is a tale about the struggle of freedom and protecting children from harm.

I went through all my Anise Stars to pull out the ones in the best shape to garnish the cocktail with.
