Ya I know… It’s already the 2nd so I may have missed to gun on this post but hey, when have I regularly been on time for anything? New Years holds a special place for me. Actually, it is the time of year I look more forward to than any. Don’t get me wrong, Halloween is still my FAVORITE holiday, but there is something especially special about those few days after Christmas and the beginning of the new year. It’s when people take the time to reflect on the past year.. successes and hardships… and become excited about what the future holds. This is the time of year, more than any other, where we allow ourselves to dream and hope and inspire ourselves to a better future. I’m always thrilled to hear the plans people hold for themselves and what changes they are driving for. Ya, a lot of people fall off the New Year transformation train pretty quickly, but a lot of people also take advantage of the motivation of the season to make truly positive changes in their lives. As I’ve said many times before, hope is the most amazing feeling any of us can allow ourselves to have and that feeling can move people to make incredible changes in their lives.
Through the bustle of the crazy holiday season, New Years gives us an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the past year. We play the years movie of our lives through our minds and reflect on the joys and anguishes we’ve experienced. We allow ourselves to identify how we have grown and expanded through the many experiences we’ve held…
2012 in review:
Vaughan and I got married at the end of 2011 & opened Kapow, so the beginning of the year was an intense experience. We fought to spend as much time together as possible while still managing to be as involved as possible in the restaurant. For Vaughan it wasn’t just Kapow, but Pizza Fusion too… Managing 2 companies and a new marriage.. Plus I had a full time job as well.
We made many new friends this year… some of which I am certain will be in our lives for a very very long time.
We competed in our first Crossfit competition together. I was scared shitless but am so glad I did it, but don’t think I could have without him by my side. We placed somewhere in the middle, but that just didn’t seem to matter.
Vaughan SHATTERED his tibia, spent 6 months bed bound, and put me into an experience that I NEVER want to have again. That was a traumatizing time, not knowing if he needed surgery or didn’t. If blood clots were going to appear or if he would heal normally. I already threatened out marriage if he ever did that again. LOL. And the worst part… He did it playing KICKBALL!
We got a “crossfit gym” put in our garage… Ok, just a lot of equipment, but it’s still pretty sweet!
I learned how to do pullups! Nuff said!
Went to Chicago for the National Restaurant Association show with Vaughan and got to push his ass around in a wheel chair the whole time. We ate at the Purple Pig which I will NEVER forget. One of the best restaurants I have ever been too. And I’m not going to lie, deep down I really enjoyed taking care of him.
I got laid off from my job… An experience that left me excited about the future and what would be next in my life. Due to this event, I started several projects and made some exciting plans. Ones that are taking longer than I had hoped for but are still in progress.
I got inundated in cocktails. I began creating the specialty cocktails for Kapow, reading anything I could get my hands on and following some of the most creative mixologists out there. I found a new passion this year. One that I plan on making waves in, in the near future.
We went on our honeymoon… Started at the Crossfit Games in LA then headed up the coast to Napa, tasting some AH-mazing wines and discovering some incredible restaurants and bars. This was THE BEST trip of my life. I fell even more in love with Vaughan and discovered how perfect we really are for each other. Plus, we vowed to make the Crossfit Games every year now.. Talk about an emotional competition.
I got to throw an awesome birthday party for Vaughan’s 40th. Soooo much fun!
I began working at Kapow as a bartender. Became friends with some incredible staff and became part of another family that I look forward to seeing every day.
I got to be part of a couple ceremonies where the perfect couples vowed their lives and loves to each other. 2011 & 2012 were full of special weddings. And I’m sure the near future will be full of babies… We are still waiting though so don’t hold your breath.
I discovered a whole new level of Andi’s personality. That dog has made me laugh more that anything else in my life. She is truly a unique character.
I got to spend Christmas with my family in Breckenridge IN THE SNOW! I haven’t seen a white Christmas in forever.
My resolution is very similar every year.. To be better than I was the year before. I resolve to be more aware, discover more about myself and to use this new found knowledge and awareness to live a happier life. I resolve to give more to those around me by being more present for them. But most importantly, I resolve to live life the best way I know how to and not live in regret or in the past. Knowing that all I can ever do is move forward, I will use each forward step to improve my life and the world around me. And when I faulter, I resolve to forgive myself, stand up and try again.
A happy New Year to you and and hears to you meeting your New Years resolutions and taking some time to reflect on how far you’ve come.
